Recognition & Rewards

Delta West Academy is proud to be able to recognize the exceptional accomplishments that students exhibit both in and out of the classroom. This commitment to learning, personal improvement, peer relations and school life that these awards represent is in all aspects, extraordinary.

Delta West Academy Scholarship - recognizes Excellence in Academic Achievement, Consistent School Spirit and Distinguished Attendance. This scholarship is available for each top student in upper elementary (Gr.4 to Gr.6) at $300, junior high at $500 and senior high at $800. Only students with the consistently highest average throughout the year are considered for the Academic Achievement portion of the criteria for this scholarship which is awarded annually. Adrian Colmenares Memorial Award - is presented in memory of Adrian who was a much-loved high school student at DWA. He was well-known for his exceptional athletic ability and sportsmanship with students of all ages, and his remarkable patience and excellent rapport with young children. This award recognizes the same qualities in a current DWA student and is financially supported by the Colmenares family at $500 per person for up to two students annually. Jacee Woods Memorial Award - is presented in memory of Jacee Woods who was only with us for a very short time but demonstrated true perseverance in the face of adversity, given his will to live. The award recognizes the ability to maintain a positive outlook and consistent school achievement despite unusual circumstances. This award is financially supported by the Woods and Dutchuk families for one student at $500 annually. (Trophy and brass name plate)

Candace Paul Award - recognizes the qualities of independent thinking, speech and action in challenging peer group situations. Candace ('95) is an exceptionally confident young woman who spoke her mind on sensitive peer issues in such a way as to earn the respect of her peers despite obvious differences of opinion, and regardless of the possible consequences. This award is presented to a current student who exemplifies the same qualities and is funded annually at $500. (Trophy and brass name plate)

School Spirit Award - recognizes the student who demonstrates excellent school spirit. This is a student who consistently displays a positive attitude both in and out of the classroom, who gets involved in clubs and school activities, who is a positive peer influence and who is just generally excited about school. Linguistics Award - recognizes Excellence in Second Language Attainment. This award is available to the top student in French and Spanish and is funded at $100. (Trophy and brass name plate)

Most Improved Student Award - annually recognizes the student in each division who has displayed greatest personal growth. This may include significant academic progress but is not restricted to such. (Engraved brass hand bell)

Most Improved Linguistics Award - recognizes exceptional improvement in attainment of Second Languages, French and Spanish, in each division from Grade 4 to Grade 12. (Engraved brass hand bell)

Outstanding School Attendance Award - is presented to those students whose attendance record boasts less than one and a half days absences and less than five lates for the whole year. (Engraved brass apple)

Milestone Award - is presented to students who have completed all of elementary, junior and/or senior high school at Delta West Academy. (Pins)

Most Valuable Player - the player of each sports team who consistently demonstrated athletic ability, excellent sportsmanship and team spirit. This athlete regularly attended practices and games, and was a positive role model for other players. (Sports tags)

Most Improved Player - the player of each sports team who has shown the most improvement over the course of the season in the acquisition of skills. (Sports tags)

Dragon's Athletic Award - is presented to a male and female athlete in junior high or high school that participates in, and actively promotes school sports with a view to continuing in high school athletics at DWA. This award is financially supported by a DWA family that wishes to remain anonymous. (Trophy and brass name plate)

Hannaford Art Scholarship - is awarded to a junior or senior high school student in the Art program who produces quality work and demonstrates creativity and artistic ability. This award is financially supported by the Hannaford family at $200 annually. (Trophy and brass name plate) 

Performing Arts Award - is awarded to a junior or senior high student in the Drama program who demonstrates outstanding achievement and effort in a theatrical setting.  (Trophy and brass name plate)

Mathematics Award - is presented to the top Mathematics student in the school. This award is financially supported by the DWA Foundation at $200 annually. (Trophy and brass name plate) 

Language Arts Award - is presented to the top Language Arts student in the school. This award is financially supported by the DWA Foundation at $200 annually. (Trophy and brass name plate) 

Science Award – is presented to the top Science student in the school. This award is financially supported by the DWA Foundation at $200 annually. (Trophy and brass name plate) 

Social Studies Award – is presented to the top Social Studies student in the school. This award is financially supported by the DWA foundation at $200 annually. (Trophy and brass name plate) 

Honour Roll Award - Honour Roll status is granted to those students who have achieved a 90% or better average in the core academic courses during each of the three reporting periods for Grade 4 to Grade 9, and at each of the four reporting periods for Grade 10 to Grade 12. (Certificate)

Mastery Award - Academic achievement in the early grades is aimed at attaining mastery of the many skills that are introduced to build a strong foundation for continuous learning. Students in Grade 1 to Grade 3 are recognized for their achievement of mastery based on a straight 'A' or better average in each reporting period. (Certificate)

Governor General Academic Medal - awarded on behalf and in the name of the Governor General of Canada, this medal is awarded to the student with the highest combined average in Grade 11 and Grade 12. This medal is usually awarded the year after the student has graduated from DWA as the Diploma exam marks required to calculate the final averages are not available until early Fall.
