Delta West Academy recognizes the impacts COVID-19 has had on many of our students and families. The educational landscape has changed so much this past year and a half and the effects on students is not without consequences. Therefore, finding and providing our students with mental health supports has become a large part of our growth and development this year as a community and a staff. Students in Grades 3-8 have taken part in an Art Therapy program to help them express and reflect on their own development.
“In the process of creating art there are ample opportunities to test reality and to put thoughts and feelings into perspective, thus helping in the process of making order out of chaos and clearing up feelings of confusion. The concrete, tangible nature of the artwork can help provide a less threatening environment. It can also provide a clear picture of the feelings of fear and despair that an individual may be experiencing. In this case the externalizing of the internal world can provide a therapeutic bridge, promoting further support and understanding.”
